1888

The first permanent Baptist church in St. Charles was established in 1888 with 19 members. The congregation purchased a German Methodist Church located on Second Street which had been built in 1868 for $3,000 and adopted the name Second Street Baptist Church, On July 7, 1915 a tornado badly damaged the building and the congregation decided to sell the building to the hospital and relocate. This original building was used by the hospital as a laundry until it was torn down in 1959.

1916

In 1916 a new building was completed on the corner of Kingshighway and Adams Street at a cost of $10,000. The new site had been an old pond and dumping ground for bottles and junk. The balcony of the church was a 3 room apartment and served as a parsonage until the membership increased and the apartment was removed to provide balcony seating.

1955

After World War II, other Baptist churches began to be established, so on November 9, 1955 the congregation changed the name of the church to it's present name, First Baptist Church of St. Charles. During the decade of the 50's the church began acquiring additional lots and houses located adjacent to the property.

1958

In August 1958, Rev. Bual Bales was called as Pastor, His tenure continued for 21 years until 1979. During his two decades of leadership the church grew and needed enlarged facilities. On June 18, 1961, a two-story educational building with a temporary worship center was dedicated. The old red brick building, built in 1961, was converted into Sunday School space. Within 10 years, the old building was torn down and a new Worship Center was dedicated on March 7, 1971. These two buildings, built under Bual Bales' leadership, served the church until August 1996.

1980

Rev. Bales retired in 1979 just as St. Charles County was experiencing explosive growth. Rev. Jay Piper was called as Pastor on February 3, 1980 and the church experienced a new surge in attendance. With this new growth the church once again determined it was time to relocate. Twenty-nine acres were purchased on Elm Street and new facilities were designed. Then tragedy struck with the death of Rev. Piper in December 1983, after a short battle with cancer. A series of tragedies ensued which devastated and demoralized the church.

1987

In the fall of 1987, Dr. David Sheppard came as Pastor of the church. A long period of evaluation followed. With the help of an outside consultant it was determined that the Elm Street location was not a good site for the relocation of the church.

1993-1997

In 1993 with the opening of the New Muegge Road the present 26 acre site became available and the congregation immediately sold the 29 acres on Elm Street and purchased this new location. Phase I consisting of a gym, classrooms and offices, was completed in December, 1995 and on the first Sunday in January, 1996 the congregation became “One Church Meeting in Two Locations.” In August of 1996 Lindenwood College purchased the facilities at Kingshighway and on August 11, 1996 the congregation was fully relocated to the new site. Plans were then made to build the new Worship Center and additional educational space, and construction began in May 1997.

1998

On Sunday, April 5, 1998, the congregation worshipped in the new Worship Center with 795 in attendance. The following Sunday, 1014 were present for Easter Sunday.

These new facilities were officially dedicated on Sunday, April 26, 1998, 110 years after the original founding of the church in 1888.
